Before You Join the Killer Biz Opp: 5 Essential Questions

The new year is here. You have enjoyed your holidays, and you are ready to start growing your home business. You are getting emails from all your friends: “Join this opportunity in pre-launch!” “Sign up now and become a Founding Member in just 10 days!” “The greatest Internet opportunity since Google is here. The first 20 members earn a lifetime of commission!”

Now, I am not making light of all the network opportunities out there. I think network and affiliate opportunities are some of the best things a person can pursue, if he or she is serious about starting a home business.

I also know many people in my life (my dad has been doing this since the early 80s, before cell phones and computers, can you imagine that?) who have been quite successful for decades. I also know a lot of friends who are really passionate about their opportunity and want to share it with others. Hey, I am the same way. (Warning to all my friends here: in about a week, you will start getting more information about my fabulous brother, Fernando Varela, who is going to be the next Bocelli. He is on iTunes and Amazon now.)

So, you have all these opportunities. You want to earn some income. You want to work from home and make your own hours. You want to be free from the daily grind. Yes, you and everyone else in the world. But as you know, 90% of people who join networking opportunities in the very beginning, leave that opportunity in less than three months without any income to show for it. So, what can you do?

Before you explore any opportunity in pre-launch, always ask the essential questions. Here are just five that might be a good start:

1. What is the product?: Forget about the compensation plan. That is not what this is about. This is about selling a product. Do you understand the product? Do you believe in it? Would you buy it yourself?

2. Have you researched the company?: And I don’t mean go on Google, enter the company name and click on the first link you see, which is more than likely the company’s web page, which never has any objective information. Take the time to do a real news search about the company. Research the company founders. Are they reputable? Do they have a proven track record? Is the company public? What is the stock selling for? Are there financials available?

3. Do you believe in your sponsor?: If you don’t know your sponsor, if you don’t trust your sponsor, if you you have never done business with your sponsor, then don’t sign up until you feel confident that your sponsor will deliver for you. Ask your sponsor: Will you be there for me? Will you mentor me? I want to excel. Teach me to do so.

4. Ok, now you can ask the compensation plan question. What about the comp plan?: When you see the comp plan with all those pretty grids and colorful matrices, I know you get excited. Who doesn’t? But before you sign up, ask yourself if the comp plan is legal (remember, if you are not selling a product someone can actually use and just exchanging money, it is most likely an illegal program). Then, if it is legal, decide for yourself how realistic it will be for you to achieve the level you want to achieve in the plan. For example, if you have to recruit 1,000 people online through a viral email to earn top A++ Director Status within a period of 60 days, chances are that you will need help. A lot of it.

5. What is your budget for running this business?: Sure, everyone tells you it is free to sign up. Free to become a member and get your own downline. Free to upgrade to 8-star level. But, remember: for you to succeed in a network opportunity, you will need a budget. I mean, if you are running a pizza place, wouldn’t you expect that you would have expenses? A network opportunity is a business, just like a pizza parlor. Expect to spend some money. Nothing is free, not even getting to become a A++ Super Golden Founding Affiliate member.

I do wish you all a great 2009 and all the success in the world. I hope that the passion you bring to your business results in a wealth of success for you. And if you ever need any help or advice with any opportunity, feel free to send me a message.
